Ryerson and York graduate scholarships are available. In addition, full-time students are eligible for paid assistantships that involve teaching, lab, or resource centre supervision, and/or research. Some additional summer funding is also available.
The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada [SSHRC] and the Ontario Graduate Scholarships also offer funds.
Please ask either of the Program Directors about funding opportunities during your advising sessions and take note of the bursary and scholarship competition notices that are circulated by the Program Office throughout the year via e-mail.
Funding to help meet the financial needs of graduate students is comprised of one or more of the following internal and external funding sources: fellowships, teaching assistantships, graduate assistantships, scholarships and awards, and research assistantships.
Full-time master’s students who receive funding support from York can expect a funding package of approximately $10,000 in their first year, met primarily through a fellowship. Full-time PhD students who receive funding support from York can expect a funding package of approximately $22,500 in their first year.
Funding availability for international graduate students is limited. Full-time international master’s students who receive funding support from York can expect a funding package of approximately $19,000 in their first year, met primarily through a fellowship. Full-time international PhD students who receive funding support from York can expect a funding package of approximately $33,500 in their first year.
Funding is contingent on continuous registration as a full-time student, continued satisfactory academic performance, and fulfillment of any funding-related employment obligations.

Scholarship and Funding Opportunities
MA students in the Joint Graduate Program in Communication and Culture are invited to apply for the Ioan Davies Award. This award is given annually to an outstanding MA student in the Graduate Program in Communication and Culture who is in financial need and has demonstrated an interest in the topics reflected in the work of Ioan Davies:
- critical cultural theory;
- culture in the global arena;
- culture in everyday life;
- technology and identity;
- the culture of cities.
Professor Davies taught at York from 1972 until his death in 2000, helped establish the African Studies Program, the Graduate Program in Social and Political Thought and the Joint Graduate Program in Communication and Culture, and was a founder of the journal border/lines. Students may be nominated by faculty, or may apply independently. The nomination, or application, must include the application form and the submission of a completed paper, thesis, or proposal. The award recipient will be invited and honoured at the annual Ioan Davies lecture.
Amount: $500 minimum
Eligibility: MA Students registered full-time at York University in Joint Graduate Program in Communication and Culture. Applicants must be Canadian Citizens or permanent residents, and an Ontario resident. Nominations/Applications should be submitted to Diane Jenner, Joint Graduate Program in Communication and Culture, TEL Building in the spring of each year. Students will be notified of the specific deadline when the competition is announced each year.

This scholarship is given annually to a graduate student in the Graduate Program in Communication & Culture, with preference given to students specializing in politics and policy. The recipient will have demonstrated academic excellence (minimum A average), financial need, and needs to be a Canadian citizen/permanent resident/protected person and an Ontario resident. The Graduate Program Director or associate director and/or admission committee will make the selection. The award is valued up to $2,000.
Scholarships of up to $10,000 may be awarded to graduate students in the Joint Graduate Program in Communication and Culture who have a stated interest in leading edge media research with a Canadian focus. Normally, students entering their second year of MA studies in the Joint GraduateProgram in Communication and Culture will be considered for this award.

Incomplete applications will not be considered for the competition. Students who are interested in applying for this scholarship must contact the Program Directors for information beyond what can be found on the OGS website. Continuing students and external applicants must submit their application through the program.
The GDF helps subsidize students' travel costs to a recognized academic event where they are presenting their scholarly or creative work. The Fund will not support travel to a commercial or remunerated event [it does not cover taxis, conference fees, hotels, associated research costs, etc.
Students are eligible to apply for the Graduate Development Fund for presentations/exhibitions already made/completed within the 6 months prior to the GDF competition deadline AND for proposals for presentations/exhibitions not yet made/completed that fall within the 6 months after the GDF competition deadline.
Students must attach to their application, either the call for papers, for events occurring after the application due date, or the program sheet from the conference, showing the conference title, host institution, title of presentation, date/time and name of the student, for events occurring before the application due date.
If you are successful in the competition the amount of the award will be deposited to your Student Account and a cheque will be cut and sent to the address that the Office of Student Financial Services has for you. Therefore, it is vital that you keep them up to date on any changes to your contact information.

The RCF helps subsidize students' own research expenses that are above and beyond those costs that are typicallyassociated with graduate work, such as travel to sources of research, payment of subjects, essential supplies, services and photocopying, etc.
The Fund generally does not cover books, conference costs, subsistence & tuition fees.
Only full-time registered graduate students who are members [past and present] of CUPE 3903 are eligible. Normally, Doctoral students have priority, followed by final year Master's. When demand is high, first-year Master's and Doctoral students are less likely to receive funding. Funding is generally not awarded on a second consecutive application within the same fiscal year [May 1 to April 30] as the first award. The Committee cannot consider applications that are incomplete.
